Rotenda Gene Nevhutalu is a South African-born Designer whose work is inspired by shapes, influenced by aesthetic experiences, and motivated by the visual & sonic representation of art in everyday life.

 

Rotenda was raised in the state of Limpopo, and after 18 years of living in the Northern Province, he moved to the city of Pretoria, enrolling for Industrial Design studies at Tshwane University of Technology, where he received a BA in 2015, and also collected numerous design and innovation awards for his social project, briGado; a product designed to help tackle the issue of housing and unemployment in underprivileged communities.

 

After interning for the product design studio SuperUltra and Actress/Radio personality Phuti Khomo, He moved out to London in 2017 to further his studies (supported by The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust and The Hosken Consolidated Investments Foundation) at the Royal College of Art, receiving an MA in Intelligent Mobility in 2019 and collaborated with the automobile manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover , on his final year thesis project which the brand also sponsored.

 

In 2020, Rotenda joined the Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer, Changan Automobile Group in Italy as a Colour, Material and Finish Design intern – delivering CMF research and concepts for interior materials & trim, and exterior colours for the company’s new EV brand, SLO3.

 

He then gained ground to spend over 2 years working for Ford Motor Company’s Vehicle Personalization Design team after joining them in 2021, developing Colour and Material concept directions, storytelling & visualization and aesthetics in media for Special Editions and Show-Cars.

 

Rotenda now works for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Colour and Materials design team. Through his work, He aims to offer a conceptual view to aesthetic experiences, intersecting a reflection on culture and the influences shaping it.
